Parameter is incorrect

I have an older dell laptop with Windows XP service pack 3 and windows media player 11 on it. It was recently re-formatted to include these. When I try to play an audio file related to a specific software I have, I get the following error "parameter is incorrect" this exact software is on my newer laptop with the same OS and media player and the files play fine. What could be the problem?

  1. Install the driver if not already done.
    Check device manager.
Check the control panel sound settings.
  2. Did you install your audio and motherboard drivers, and codecs needed by your audio software?
  3. I believe I have done all of the above.
