Deciding Between I7 MB and an AMD AM3 MB-Longevity?

I am going to upgrade my MB within next few weeks-first motherboard upgrade I have ever done. It should be fairly easy. I am a pretty smart guy-also have a laptop as a backup until I get things figured out.

I am trying to decide with type of motherboard will give me the best longevity in terms of upgrading to future processors.
Would an I7 motherboard be able to accept the next batch of Intel Chips? I know that the Am3 MB will be able to accept AMD's next processors-the ones with 6 cores. I am not a hardcore gamer or anything like that-just want good performance for the tasks I do-occasional gaming (waiting patiently for Battlefield 3) and some experimentation in multimedia photoshop-really for personal reasons. Any assistance would be appreciated.

i7 will be able to accept the new series, not sure about AMD,s AM3.

Both sockets should at least have a life-span of 5 or more years before EOL..

AM4 will not be out till 2014, not sure about Intels next platform....
