The TV is Hitachi 55" Directors Series Native Resolution 1368X768. 1080i and 720p. Will be used for Blu ray, dvd, internet and light gaming. Was considering the Powercolor 3870 512mb 256bit. Is this good for my purposes? Overkill?

3870/4670 should do fine... maybe even an 8800gt, but the 3870/4670 come with integrated audio via hdmi, which might be in your best interest

If you were looking into slight gaming, I'd say the 4670. I have it in my second rig, and it works very well. (E7200 @ stock, 4GB PC667 DDR2, Radeon 4670 @ stock)

Edit, also The 4670 requires WAY less energy then a 3870. Plus it maxes out basically everything in 720P Native mode on my 1080p (My 4850 is connected to my 720p as its stand alone monitor, 1080p is general purpose television).
