(Firstly if you dont see a response from me its because i killed myself after spending R36 000.00/$4500.00 on a new system only to get the following results.)
Right i went on a bit of a spending spree recently, bought 2 26"LCD samsung monitors, new PSU, New Asus X48 Motherboard, Q6600, 8GB DDR2 800 Ram, HDD's etc. oh and a new Raidmax case to keep things cool.
so my Q6600 i have o.c to 3.2Ghz, 400FSBx8 1600 FSB raiting
My HD4870 from Sapphire is a 512mb, clocks running at 830mhz for the Gpu and 1105 for the Mem (somehow you can select 1100 straight....wierd)
I have an ASUS Rampage Edition X48mobo
and all the extras to go with... running on a 1000W PSU
Ok so i set everything up, installed the new Catalyst drivers patched the Bios of my Sapphire to latest version.
My results as follows.
3Dmark Vantage P9934 (Cpu 11814, GPU 9394)
Vantage then gave me the finger on the graph showing me where i rank in comparison to 85 similar systems and it was on the very far left of the graph. This irritated me more than words can speak.
so i did a search - 3dmark vantage scores - performance - core 2 quad systems - 3000 to 3400 cpu - HD4870 - single card solutions - Windows Vista X64
The results came out with scores as high as P15000 for systems with Q6600's
This was like kicking a man while down and then stealing his watch and underpants
Granted i have super lame transcend DDR2 800 mem 4x2GB Dimms which have the over clocking capability of George W's tie, but come on... P9934 and there are scores of P15000+ i wanted to vomit.
I have tried everything Bar coating everything in gold plating for better connection and welding power cables directly onto the bus.
my system is running cool GFX Card at load 54'C, CPU at load 42'C, Northbridge 48'C, Southbridge 40'C, case temp sitting at 37'C.
Please help, because Bar Budda, Alah, God and sweat Baby J blessing my system in divine intervention i am stuck.
What about the VGA on those 15K systems? I'm no Vantage connoisseur, but I'm thinking it accounts for the whole system. Maybe those 15K guys had a "X2" on their 4870. Anyways, try other benchmarking utilities as well, maybe Vantage does not work well for you.
I have no clue how to benchmark Crysis, but at 1920x1080 it runs well the Fraps reads out anywhere from 40 - 60 fps all details on high, no FSAA - dont know how to benchmark COD4 either but that i get 100fps+ with everything on max and FSAA 8x. counter strike source max everything FSAA8x AAx16 i get 326fps in the stress test.
with Furmark if i change the EXE file to test.exe i get 6598 furmarks at 1280x1024
Games feel and look great, i cant say i am not happy with the performance at all. The Card is great and am loving it, thats why i ordered another one, for the price R3 400.00 (South African currency) its un beatable, the GTX 280 is R7000 - R8000 depending on brand here. so i can get 2 Sapphire 4870's for the cost of 1 GTX 280.
however in the interum and after about 67 reboots and several cups of coffee i managed to get P10053 in Vantage and 17023 in 3dMark 06. which i am happy with. I think there was something wrong with the Orb.futuremark search i did as well, i did it again after my score of 10053 and there was only 2 scores over 10000 both of which in the details tab listed CrossfireX systems but 3dmark results said no linked display cards.
i think the marks at 14000+ were all dual card results.
What i still cant figure out though is if P10000 odd is a very good, decent, average score for my system. considering the money is spent on it i was hoping to get a very good score for my config and not the view i got on the comparison sheet on orb.futuremark saying i am ranked way at the bottom of 127 similar systems. ( still causes a bit your teeth pain when i read that ).
Well, you know some people simply live to post high benchmarks, and they might be doing something that you don't see on the posted specs to get those really high numbers. If it runs a game like Crysis that well, all is smooth and enjoyable, you shouldn't let it bother you too much!
Fair point.. i guess when you see scores of P20000+ there are people with nothing better to do than soak a machine in liquid nitrogen and watch endless loops of benchmarking.
it has killed me having to watch 50+ loops of the stupid thing, having the system crash, re installing etc. I think i am happy with the current set up, its stable, running cool and performance rocks at the moment, i just had no clue to what it should be running at.
If the system does what you want, why stress over about some benchmark score? Starting to think that's all you built the system for. The only time I run any kind of benchmark is when I boot up the system for the first time mainly to break it in. The scores of my system? I don't remember. Why? Because my system does what I need it to do at a pace that keeps me happy. Besides, I didn't buy an e2200 and a Nvidia 7300LE to run 3DMark on it. I bought them to do word processing all day.
A super computer is built for a single purpose. Millions of dollars are spent towards the computer doing one task very, very well.
Do you think they care what the Supercomputer manages to Vantage Benchmark at?
3D Mark is just people waggleing their e-peens high in the air. Just because someone scores 20,000+ on 3D mark does not mean they are going to have a more enjoyable experience running crysis than you are.
40-60FPS in Crysis, why are you upset about this? That's pretty damn good. Crysis is a poorly optimized poorly implemented game. It looks great but it could have looked just as good and ran significantly better (As Warhead demonstrates.)
In 3-4 years we will all be able to bench Crysis at 100+ FPS, just like today we can all Bench Titan Quest at 100+ FPS, yet when it came out even the beefiest of systems had a heart attack with it, same with Oblivion.
Throwing thousands of dollars at a single poorly optimized game is just foolish.
40-60FPS in Crysis? Your going to eat Far Cry 2 & Fallout 3 for breakfast, if gaming is your goal, your going to be fine.
Yeah, i must be honest, Crysis looks great but not so great that it justifies the horrific framerates that it spits out. Yeah i cant complain about how Crysis runs at all. infact that was one of the points i made earlier, i have no issue with the performance of my machine, it runs great, awesome infact.
I think Crysis has issues with ATI as well or the otherway around, not sure, but none the less it runs well.
I would assume that once Games start using Multi thread Core specific instructions they would improve as well. at the moment its just bucket computing, if you have processing power it uses it, but the code is not optimised for Dual or Quad core computing, nor is it 64Bit optimised.
after the information i have recieved on this and another forum i am happy to accept that 3dMark has no real proof of performance when it comes to game based performance and enjoyment.
I retract my mission to get a higher framerate and simply state that Games look un believable, being able to play in 1920x1080 with 8XMSAA and 16xAF on most of them is a true joy, crisp, bright, smooth graphics rendered in highly acceptable speeds.
well not all of it were components, R12 000.00 / $1700 were two 28" LCD's
new was the power supply, CPU, motherboard, case, coolers, harddrives and GFX Card.
And on looking again the system doesnt appear to be as bad as indicated initially.
The highest result on a single HD4870 card with a Q6600 cpu is 11000 in the clock range of 3.4Ghz.
