I have overclocked my i5 to 3.6ghz with acceptable temperatures. Now should I enable speedstep or would it result in lack of performance ?

Why don't you try, come back and tell us what you think, that would be a good idea. :)

Speed Step slows the CPU down when you are not using it, if the demand is there, the system will draw on it and performance is not affected. At high OC's above 4 Ghz, disabling SS can help w/ stability.

Thanks for your input. I tried disabling and enabling speedstep. To tell the truth I noticed better performance when disabling it. Will it stress my hardware if I shall permanently disable it ?

Not at all. The CPU will last far longer than most of the other components in your system, and certainly well into obsolescence.
