Hi guys, tried looking elsewhere for a topic like this, but couldn't find one (maybe I'm blind lol).. anyways, I have an (upto) 8Mbps broadband connection with Virgin Media, which, based on my distance to the exchange, should be giving me about 3.2 Mbps true download speed. I have run the speedtest from speedtest.net before on the same package, but different modem, and got 2.8 Mbps download, and 1Mbps (approximately) upload, which was fine... However, I now have a Netgear DG834Gv5 Wireless Modem Router (I'm wired to my PC with Ethernet cable to the router, and it's the only one on the network atm).. I decided to run a speed check today and this is what i got...

so yeah.. that's lame! tried contacting the Virgin Media guys who said they'd call back... they haven't so far! :fou:

I'm running Windows Vista with Firewall off and got the newest firmware for the modem ... any suggestions??

Cheers,

Josh

According to http://www.which.co.uk/news/2009/07/virgin-fastest-in-new-broadband-speed-test-181117.jsp virgin media is supposed to be the "fastest"

Try the speed tester available at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html and see if it matches the speedtest.net results. Also perform the test at different times of the day and average it.....

There is another article at http://www.which.co.uk/advice/boost-your-broadband-speed/speed-up-your-internet/index.jsp that could shed some light on the situation.

Sorry couldn't be of more help :(

Heya Foxy, cheers for the data, unfortunately for me it was nothing covered in there. However, after having to speak to the manager of the Virgin Media Call Centre, and demanding to be put through to the manager of the Technical Department, I finally got to someone who knew what they were talking about.. and FINALLY checked my BRAS profile with BT..

(incase anyone doesn't know, your BRAS profile is capped automatically if their system believes you to have a fault, usually takes 3 days to reassign the profile.. 576 down and 288 up was an obvious cap imo.. so after enquiring as to why it was such an exact figure {such as 0.5meg connection}.. they checked the BRAS.. 3 days later here I am)

so, looking a lot better now.. took me a total of 7 days to get this fixed due to the stupidity of some of the guys at the call centre.. and a total of 5 hours being on hold =/

Cheers,

Josh
