Sounds like your heatsink is not getting proper contact.
try and reseat it

just reseated, no luck

Is it sitting tight? cause it really sounds like its loose.

If your cores were at 80C you would not be idling at all.

What does Core Temp say?

Push down on the heatsink while monitoring the temps. Those pins stink on the Intel heatsinks.

heatsink sounds loose...

i assume you are running thermal paste? if so which kind

CPU core temp in CPUID Hardware monitor was 80- 90 deg C and similar in bios HW monitor, tried reseating and pushing down heatsink while monitoring.

time to get a not stock fan and some compound me thinks.

any recommendations?

+1 on heatsink what type is it? What past you using? How are you putting the paste on? It could be tricky if you do any of those wrong, especially pushpin types.

here is a list of top heatsinks..

someone else may argue what exactly is the best... but you can't go wrong with these ones listed..

its the stock heatsink and fan, did a quick search and apparently they are gash.

off to novatech tomorrow i guess.

+1 on crappy intel stock coolers, especially the pin. The best way to tell is hold down the cooler and check the temps. They'll probably drop.

Erm, no.

You have 4 cores, not one.

Download the program RealTemp or Core Temp and let's get accurate readings of your cores, not the prone-to-error Tcase.

As I said, CPU Hardware Monitor, shows all four cores and they were running at 80C+. Anyhow I got a new cooler and presto all cores at sub 30C.

redux, I am building a similar system and was wondering which cooler you went for?
