I am planning on getting a AMD Phenom II X4 (I havent decided on 940 or 920 prob 940). I want it to be:
- AM3 Compatible, incase i decide to upgrade in the future.
- Two 16X Pci-express slots, that run crossfire at 16x/16x
- Decent OCing Board
- Around or below £100, (Say about $200)
- Onboard Gfx isn't needed
- Raid contoler (this isn't that important as i can buy a seperate later)

I know all about intel boards but nothing about AMD so any help would be much appresiated
What chip-set would you recomend, i guess 790 but dont know if i want fx or gx
What chip-set makers are best for AMD boards?

THX for any help

ermm AM3 mobo isnt out yet not true AM3 anyways, if you want a intergarted VGA than the 780G would be the choice, but other wise the 790GX, FX is for the currnet "spider" platform I belive..

personlay I would go for asus for AMD mobos I had AMD on gigabyte and as rock and they blow up :o asus once didn't.

on the AMD chipset boards in the 7 seris I know have that ATI SB600 which has raid built in for SATA2, however I know the GX 790 and maybe the FX have got the better 750 SB from ATI maybe this might be what your looking for.

790GX is crossfire 8x/8x (2.0 though, so it is same bandwidth as 16x 1.0 which is really enough for most cards). 790FX is true 16x/16x. Unless you are really set on 16x/16x, is would probably be more cost effective to go with 790GX (and then probably with Asus or someone like that, my Gigabyte board has a couple Phenom II glitches and does not officially support PII yet (though a new BIOS should fix that)).

AMD (ATI) chipset is generally best for AMD, as Intel is best for Intel. NVidia has improved, but unless you want to SLI, I'd stick with AMD/ATI.

I haven't tried the AMD RAID personally, But I though I heard it had issues. You'll have to research that more.

I know with me in the US you can get the top-of-the-line Asus 790FX board for $180. That one I think fits your bill best. Look into it and see if you like it. It should be a very solid board.

the only real difference between fx and gx is integrated graphics just make sure you get one with the sb750

K im looking at the:
GA-MA790GP-DS4H at £115
and
Asus M3A79-T Deluxe at £135
Wat u think, i dont need the onboard graphics of the GX chipset so im looking more at the Asus but is it worth the extra £20

Fallen,

Since you already said you want to have 16x/16x, your only option is 790FX chipset. Just make sure it is combo with SB750 soutbridge.

I'm building one myself, and currently aiming at DFI LANPARTY-DK 790FXB-M2RSH.

If you want to get DDR3, then you will need to wait for a bit longer. Due to insignificant different in performance between DDR2 & DDR3, I will stick with DDR2 board (cheaper). Fyi, AM2+ board does support future AM3 procesors.

If you want to wait, these 2 boards are looking good: ASUS M4A79 DELUXE AM3 / AM2+ or GIGABYTE GA MA790FXT-UD5P.

Hope this help.

How important is the SB750 southbridge over the SB600 as it seems to make quite a price difference?

if I rember correctly, the read/write speeds on the HDDs are alot faster, can support more with the SB750, i m only going off memory here.
