hi guys,

im considering a new dragon platform build but the problem is i dont have any existing amd cpus and want to go with a phenom II 920. I wanted to ask you if there are any motherboards out there with out of the box support for phenom II since i wont be able to update the bios with an old amd cpu.

i was considering the M3A78-t but it seems that requires a bios update to recognize phenom II as well.

Help will be much appreciated, thanks.

well im on a limited budget and ideally i would want a 790GX/FX chipset not more than $130 maybe the biostar TA790gX? again the main issue is straight out compatibility with phenom II without an update

i have no idea about ur question, but i will say this: dont get a AMD processor they dont overclock well at all and AMD has horrible innovation,
if ur on a tight budget get a e2200 or e7200 they are oc CHAMPS easy 3.8+

Reply to brendin

brendin your talking about much older dual core processors while im trying to get a decent quad which is giving me good value for money.

anyway thats not the point of my post, i need help with my motherboard which can run out of the box for me.

currection, they used to not overclock well...the PhenomII cpu is better than a intel Q6600 in everyway and it gives the 9550 a run for its money. in terms of Overclocking AMDs new creation can go wayy past a Q6600 which runs out of steam at 3.6, I ve had mine higher than that but it won't even make 3.2Ghz now but thats a different story.

I think they will all need a BIOS update for it to reqonise the new chip.

jawallace...so your MSI worked out of the box directly for you?

you guys have any idea if this ASRock board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813157141
ships with a supported bios since it says AM3 CPU ready?

Reply to gusadolphus

heh basicly a asus :P, yeah when they say AM3 ready than they might have flashed it from factory to support it, but sometimes I noticed they don't they just test it, but it still needs to be flashed lol

Thanks for the info natev. Just to help other people bumping into this thread, while i have been gathering info seems that the MSI DKA790GX and the ASUS M3A78-t will support the phenom II but just wont recognize it if they dont ship with the latest bios. So u can probably upgrade the latest after putting the cpu in, it just wont have an id.

I am not 100% sure on this, but people have said this while they were doing their builds.

@gusadolphus

I just upgrade my system from socket 939 to a Phenom II. I am using gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H. It didn't recognise my cpu but it still run my cpu no problem. I even able to overclocked it to 3.6ghz with multiplier only with default voltage.

I had zero experience in flashing bios, thanks to "@bios" utility from gigabyte board, I am able to flash new bios in window environment. I just flashed to a new bios which recognise my Phenom II. (I was scared, but I did it, it was so easy)

check it out on newegg, I think it is just slightly above your budget.

Sorry, dunno how to link it... but copy and paste should work.

Hope this help.

Thanks for the help Ken!

Well i made my build last week with the phenom II and ASUS M3a78-t and it went phenomenal
not a hint of hesitation, the board shipped from newegg with a 0602 bios and fully recognized the phenom II
the build is running beautifully, its eating VS 2008 and photoshop for breakfast

so thanks a lot for the help guys!

My Build:
Antec Basiq 500W PSU
Rosewill Conqueror WBK Case
ASUS M3A78-t 790GX
AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0Ghz
GSkill 1066mHz 2x2 GB DDR2 Ram
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB HDD

I just upgrade to the Phenom II 940 BE with the M3N-ht deluxe and its a hit and miss with bios upgrades because my uncle bought the same setup as me and his booted right up no problems mine on the other hand was a nightmare because the beta update didnt even work so i had to use the one before it and keep switching the cpus out. and for the guy who said they dont overclock doesnt know what hes talking about mines running at 3.6 on aircooling

Reply to wildgene789

My bad i just overclocked to 3.72 on aircooling and right now im at 39 c
