A few weeks ago, my Gateway 6020GZ notebook that I've had about 3.5 years decides to die on me. The chipset chip that is center on the motherboard actually burned orange until the power cut off. Now, is it worth it to attempt to repair said computer, or should I just try and salvage what I can (hard drive, etc.) and move on to a newer one. Can chipset chips be replaced, or does the whole motherboard need to be replaced? What could have caused this problem, so that I can avoid doing the same thing, or prevent it from happening.

I would find a shop that specializes in notebooks, and have them check both the board and power supply. Heat is what kills components. You may want to just transfer the old drive to a brand new notebook. You'll still need a shop to save your old files; changing boards usually requires a formatted drive to reload windows; a shop can backup your old files to a cd using a similar notebook, and load them on your new system later. I personally won't buy a used notebook, no matter what the warranty. New ones are around $600. I use slickdeals or fatwallet to look for specials.
