Any help here is appreciated, i have a few dilemma's that i am struggling to resolve.
Please bear in mind i am at a very early stage, but i have a good idea of what i want...i just need to find the products to do it.
My system absolutely has to have a x4 Phenom sitting in it, i know this is thelatest processor and i want my system to be good for a few years.
So im looking for an AM2 board that will also do 2 GFX cards.
Heres my problem - i cant decide between crossfire or SLI at the mo.
Im leaning towards 8800GT x2 but am i just fascinated with 2 cards? Is there a way to get that power/price ratio without running 2 cards?
4gb RAM, probably corsair DDR2, and i think a 500w PSU supports all this.
Im trying to allocate my budget as follows:
Motherboard £60
Processor £120
GFX £120
Remainder for psu, ram, OS. (rest of the bits i have and will add to the system over a month or 2)
My questions are:
For £120 what will do a Phenom justice?
Which board will fit the Phenom and aforementioned card within the budget?
I appreciate there are a lot of variables to consider, but even if i have 2-3 suggestions it is much better than the hundreds of boards / cards i have in my head at the mo >.<
well, if you REALLY want to go with a Phenom, then I'd go with a 9850...(which is about more or less equal to a stock Q6600, but do keep in mind that the Q6600 will OC more than the 9850)
what resolution are you going to be playing on? because if its really low, then you can afford to get a cheaper videocard
------------------------------AMD64 X2 6000 + Biostar Tseries 770 + 4gb DDR2 800 G.Skill + Thermaltake WingRS case + Raidmax 530w modular PSU + 200gig internal WD HD + 250gig external WD HD + 500gig external Simpletech HDD + Belkin Wireless G PCI receiver + Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD4850

Im trying to do things in order and get the best i can for the budget and see what sorta resolution comes out the other end....i guess this isnt the best way to do it then.
I know thats not terribly helpful, the only solid figure i can give is the cash.
well that resolution isnt terribly high...you should probably consider a 4850 (they are awesome)
if going with vista, you definitely are going to want 4gb of RAM...
as for mobo, well if you want to crossfire, I would look into the 790gx mobos or the 790FX mobos...I think the 790gx's are a little cheaper and tend to produce higher OC's....if you dont want to crossfire, than a solid 770 board will do...

Well If it's just a gaming rig you're after a dual-core will easily suffice and give you some hefty savings. Personally, I think it's a wiser decision given how cheap AMD's Duals are right now and how much cheaper their Quads will be come time you upgrade to one. Here's a a dual-core build:
If for some reason you'd buy from Newegg there is a combo discount of $20 between that mobo and processor, as well as 70$ worth of mail in rebates.
With the quad-core you're looking at = $788.89 Same discounts above apply to this also, except there is a $5.00 more saving on the combo giving a total of $75.00 is discounts.
Approx value ~$714

Right....that motherboard is EXACTLY the specs i was after...i just could not find all i wanted on one board. overall it looks very good, thank you for taking the time to do that for me mate
Will have to eBay a few odds and ends (prolly the 4850 when i get the funds in the bank for it as well for around 100 quid) but overall this comes to £422 aka $776.
Just need to throw an O.S. on top of that and i will have a nice gaming rig for very close to U.S. prices
