Not at all in my opinion. You're wasting a lot of money on underperforming or slightly overpriced components.

First of all, the 780i board... Lose it. Nvidia chipsets are pretty lousy, they have stability and heat issues, not to mention mediocre overclocking capabilities. Get an X38 board with DDR2 support and you'll be much happier with it. (I tend to favor the DFI Lan Party X38-T2R)

You could also get the E8400 for $20, but the only true advantage that the E8500 possesses is a 0.5x extra multiplier... That's hardly worth the $20, given Wolfdale CPUs overclocking ceiling.

The raptor is not really worth it, especially with the new 640GB WD caviar going for $80, it is speedy enough and has 9 times as much storage for a lesser price.

Since even after considering rebates, there's only a $10 difference between the GTX 260 and an HD 4870 (with aftermarket cooling), I'd definitely take the ASUS HD 4870, it's a no-brainer in my opinion.

ASUS EAH4870/HTDI/512M/A Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail

There's about $120-150 saved there (That's what I estimate anyway) and you're actually getting better quality components.

The brands dont worry me much I just want to spend $1400 on the best possible hardware for the money.

EMP
Could you please link me the ram you were talking about in your post

This is my first build and I have no knowledge on overclocking

Also im not sure if i should get dual core or quad core

+1 for emp's suggestions.

The issue with the 74Gb Raptor is not size. Those are old drives and the 6400AAKS is actually faster like stated above. There is no reason to go with the old Raptor drives. You could go with the 150Gb VelociRaptor if you really can't live without a Raptor, but I would still get the 6400AAKS.

Edit: I would also ditch the IDE DVD drive for a SATA drive. No need having a big IDE cable in your new build.

If he wants to stick with nvidia (which isn't really a wise decision at his price point), then he should go for a P45 board and a 9800GX2. The whole point is to stay away from nvidia chipsets, before it was a necessary evil (680i, 780i, and 790i) since nvidia cards outperformed Ati counterparts, but since the HD 4000 release we're finally freed from their bad chipsets and people can finally get P45/X38 boards without compromising graphics performance.

CD/DVD - I agree with oicwutudidthar, get a samsung, and SATA rather than IDE.

CASE - awesome case, I love my Antec 900

Hard Drive - The raptor is a waste of money I think. Get an SATA-II Seagate

Monitor - Your chosen monitor seems to have good reviews. I've never used Acer personally. No comments other than I'd prefer a 24" lol.

GPU - I'm an ATI 4870 1GB fan myself, but that would require you to change your board to a CrossFire compatible board if you wanted an SLI/X-fire option in the future.

RAM - OCZ is usually good RAM and it has a nice rebate. Some people complain about not getting OCZ rebates though. Just a heads up

Mobo - No clue, I'm an AMD fan

CPU - Same as mobo, but this seems to be a popular CPU amongst the Intel crowd.

PSU - Should be plenty as far as watts are concerned and as far as I'm aware OCZ has great PSU's as well. Only question is if you can find something else just as good for cheaper.

If it was up to me, I'd get a quad core (Q9550) with the savings from my suggestions, but some people prefer cheaper dual cores, I see it this way though... You can always overclock quad cores, but you can add cores to a dual core.

The ram you picked looks alright, but I like these kits...

OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227284

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122

I really like both kits, I might take the G.Skill one, because of the price. Heh... maybe even some GeIL black Dragon kits could work too...

Quad core does make a difference. Take a look at the HD 4850s I linked, they are $5 cheaper each and have a better cooling solution. Other than that, it looks great.
