New build for my wife

Hello all!

I'm trying to get Two boxes made, Mine can be a little more robust than my wifes box.

I am looking at the quad CPUS for both designs unless a cheaper but robust build is available.

I have two 19' monitors to use so GPU wise im not needing More graphix card than what each monitor will require.

We both play MMO's WOW and i been testing the Wrath of the Litch king and figure Id like at least enough gpu power so that I can minimize lag with the graphics. I also will play ghost recon Advanced warfighter and Supreme Commander, World at war, and other Games that might require a bit more power than my wifes box.

I see that both AMD and Intell are due to have new cpus out that make current mbs obsolete.

I am also likeing the ASUS mbs that have the power conservation ect .

I'm also trying to get items from new egg that are free shipping to help keep my budget .

So far this is what my wifes box is configured

Asus P5q-E Lga 775 Intel P45 ATX Intell MB

Western Digital Caviar se16 500 gig hard drive

Ocz platinum 4gb ddr2 1066
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227298

msi R4670 Radeon vid card

Windows Vista Home premium sp1 64 bit

Zalman CNPS9700 led cpu cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

Subtotal: $815.91

She probably doesnt need quad core and 1066 speed ram .

I figure put also In my box for now a 4670 vid card and when its time to get a better one crossfire it with the one in her box.

My wife is coming from a e machine amd 3000 with 512 mb and a radeon x1550 vid card

Mine is a del with a pent 4 and a simmular radeon vid card.

What I also want to do is work with Apps that will do machinima, Id like least 4 gigs ram in each box. Two hard drives for mine

And i might have a 2k budget but getting closer to 1700 or lower would be great .

Also wouldnt mind seeing some good amd builds too

More about build wife
  1. ok what you got there sound fine but here are some mods and suggestions.
for your wife get like a E7200 processor. from what it sounds like that should do every thing she needs. for you: i would probably stick with the q6600 as you want to play some games that need the extra cores ( ie supreme commander). for your self you should get the 4870. the 4670 should be fine for your wife. the ram is fine but you can probably find something cheaper if you pay for shipping. i would also highly recommend you get at lest a 500 watt PSU for both builds. i dont suggest the mobo though. its really too expensive.

The mother board too expensive? This motherboard looks to be pretty good for a p45 chip set. still looking for a appropriate psu
  3. Although it's a great price, i would not use a Raidmax power supply for anything more than a $100 throw away system. It's always worthwhile to get a decent power supply for any system you run.
  4. "Mine can be a little more robust than my wifes box. "

    The Male condition, well done.
  5. male condition?! well see been over 5 years since my computer was new and hers only three. I then figured why not upgrade both puters to something we both can enjoy performance gains and at a best value for price with current hardware. It just seems that quad cores could offer alot. Im trying to work a best for the value computers with the maximum of 2k to spend and a realistic budget of 1750$ or less to strive for.
  6. Ok this so far is the revision from my first tentative build.

my wife is upgrading from a amd semperon 3000 with 512 mb ram E machine with a radeon 1500 in it.

Besides internet some basic shooters and Wow <wrath of the litch king will be a bit more demanding than current live wow> is this going to seem to her faster than blazes?

I need to tighten this without sacrificing the 4 gig ram vista 64 .

I know that the gpu is not current uber but since she has a 19' lcd monitor I didnt think i needed the gpu power for higher resolutions at this time .

some how I gota get two puters made that are best bang designs for current market.
So if there are some good valid amd designers out there that could make this box cheaper with a quad core that might perform better give me a try Id love to see the designs.

I want to stay crossfire It seems so far the better way to set things up at this point. I wouldnt mind seeing a amd build that also uses the 790fx with the 750 southbridge to use the acc to help with overclocking.
I dont think I need to oc the ram for the wifes box tho.

This is so far the current Intel box design for my wife. Im also trying to make my box with hers fit under 2000 but also trying to fit under 1750$ So i can get a graphic tablet a logitech g11 keyboard a decent sound system

Any help appreciated but lets try to not get it into a fanboi discussion of which company does what but work on what really are best bang boxes for the current market. Also if you factor in free shipping ect in the designs be appreciated.

  7. A few things to further trim down cost:

    e5200 instead of e7200.
It's cheaper, overclocks better, and while performance is lower than e7200, the difference is small.

9600gso, $50 after mir. Performance is slightly above 4670.

Instead of the $54 Zalman heatsink, get this one instead. Cools far better for less.

The case fans for $30 is overpriced. Get something else:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010110573%201372726538&bop=And&Order=PRICE
Not to mention cases usually come with fans.

    For ram, instead of this:

    Use this model:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227269
Far better timings, better overclocking, cheaper after mir, and comes with free shipping.

For hdd, consider this one instead:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145215

For motherboard, the downgrade from p45 to p35 for merely $15 less is not worth it. Motherboard is the foundation of every system. A sturdy foundation will save you headaches later.
  8. Its a shame that rebates and Po boxes dont work.

I shaved alot with your recomendations for the ram and that cpu cooler. As for the front fans I think for my wifes case i could just use ones that have no neon color to them.

definitely like the price for the 500 gig hds.

next project is how to build my box.

I look at the quad cores and wonder if I should go for a q9300 instead of a q 6600, or go with a wolfdale duo 8400.

besides wanting to do dual boxing with wow in wrath of the litch king <more graphics demand than live currently> I will be playing supreme commander, <can use all the cores of the quad> and Graw2 and look forward to Star craft 2, fallout 3 .

I also plan to do some machinima and Id thought the quad core might be better but then that is a goal rather than something i must do.

i look at the q8200 and wonder why intell decided to make it. seems there are better older quads that have bigger cache memory that even being 65 nm die that theyd still run loops around the 8200

So any pointers ideas how to make a great build that is more on best bang for the current buy and why be appreciated.

I must admit i drool over the specs of the asus p45 maximus 2 mb ... but the price is a bit steep for my budget.
