Exactly! Just figured I'd help the people who can actually afford an I7 platform shave $50 off of their $800 purchase. No way I could afford one right now, and I'll be happy with my current system for another year or two.

Great, just dont forget your $300 mobo and save a couple hundred more for ram and your all set.

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9T-6GBNQ - Retail (Free shipping)
Item #: N82E16820231223 $159.99
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-DS4 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Item #: N82E16813128366 $244.99

Subtotal: $404.98

Yeah, such a terrible price for mobo and memory. Add $250, and you are still under $700, minus shipping/handling.
Why the fascination of always thinking that there are only $300 motherboards, when there are 4 over $300, 10 under $300, and 7 under $280?

All prices from Newegg (dated: 12/17)

Thanks for the news, I'll be sure to pass it on.

I think I'll wait for a wider selection of X58 motherboards to be released and lower DDR3 prices though.

Very nice find.
Once the motherboard manufacturers decide release them at about ~$120 USD I'll pick up an i7.

I doubt that will happen anytime soon. Look at the X48 prices, they are still over $150USD @ newegg, and X38 boards are still over $130USD.

Have to remember that these are enthusiasts boards, and are going to always cost more. Some obscenely high, but most are still higher than mainstream boards.

If you are waiting for a $120USD X58 board, that's not going to happen. You might have to settle for the Core i5 setup (which is the mainstream CPUs).

Now all they need to do is drop it another $100 or so, and they might actually sell more than a handfull. Intel margins down, AMD margins up. That's the only way this can play out now that Intel can't manipulate the market through bribery and other illegal actions, charging exorbitant prices regardless of performance. And that can only be good for the industry, albeit a decade or more late.

@ NMDante. You are absolutely right. What I meant to say is that many people will not upgrade to an i7 until the main stream boards costing around $120 come out. I'm guessing it will be another Quarter or two until that happens.

Yes. I am figuring that the Core i5 will be the more accessible Core i series setup.
The problem with waiting until i7 boards to drop to $120 is that, they simply won't. The Core i7 boards have the "X" designation, which is simply for high end (enthusiasts). I think the Core i5 (P55?) boards will be priced like most P45/43 boards.

Maybe ASRock will put out a cheap X58 board, but right now, don't even look for one in the immediate future (I'm guessing most of next year...Q2 of 2010, maybe?).

$250 is an exorbitant price? I think I paid more than that for my Q6600.

I paid $200.00 for my Q6600 a year after it came out. I'm thinking a Core I7 920 will drop to around the same price if not less in a year as well. Just in time for me to build a new system and move my current one to server/encoding duty.

I see. Thanks for the info. I totally forgot about the i5s down the road that are meant for the mainstream.
