So pretty much I upgraded my PSU because I was planning to get a GTX 260. This was all going smoothly until I learned about bottlenecking. I honestly didn't think my CPU was that out of date AMD 64 X2 4400+ at 2.3ghz. OCing is not an option because of a locked motherboard. I want to play games at 1280x1024 high or max settings and good fps. But this is probably a dream. Money is a big limit here too. Is there any suggestions? Will the bottleneck really be that bad? etc..

Current rig

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ (2 CPUs), ~2.3GHz

2046MB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

If your gaming at 1280X1024, the CPU is a bigger bottleneck then your gpu. You would be better off putting that money into a low end p45 motherboard and a e5400 and OC it. Then, in 6 months or so when you want to get more fps from your games, upgrade your video card then.

+1

the rig should still be able to run newer games at the moment

waiting game is good right now, new cpus from AMB will be coming out, which should force the prices of some of the older stuff down further

you could pick up a 3ghz X2 at a good price in a few weeks
