I need to build a graphic workstation and looking at what is available on the market I realized that I am in big trouble, I need serios reading to decide what to buy and build. I will start asking for some reading recommendations. I used to read Tom's Harware guide in PDF format and at that time it was a very good source for updating your knowledge in this respect (PC hardware). I believe that doesn't exist anymore and it will be more appropriate to learn from dedicated docs for each of these:
-motherboards
-CPUs & memory
-cooling systems and cases
-graphic cards
-IO and storage (HDDs)
..please feel free to add anything you think I should read.
So please if you know about good and concise documentations and introductions regarding this components point me to the docs/sites and I will do my part (the reading )
On the other side I will kindly ask you to help me with some recommendations regarding what to buy and to frankly tell me if I will be able to put together what I will buy :-)).
I used to be able to build a PC from scratch 6-7 years ago but since then I haven't read a word about the new things in the PC world, the job forced me to read extensively other subjects.
This is what I would like to build:
- a very good 24" LCD monitor (camera built in if possible)
-graphic card able to support two monitors, I do not intend to play games
-I need to connect the graphic card/PC with a HDTV and viceversa
-I need a TV tuner (possibly this will have to be a separate card not ATI all in wonder like)
-all in one card reader for my cameras
-all the I/O connectors like USB, Firewire SATA and so on available
-please recommend me the right amount of memory (I use Photoshop, Light Room and Ulead Video studio),
-I may need to run VMware or other emulators and I would like to be able to install 2 (3 if possible) quad port network cards (this is optional)
-the target is the HD performance for video as the camera and the TV will be HD capable
Please tell me what else I may need to add to the list and indicate your favorite hardware for that or what you are using.
The final result must be an above average graphic workstation, in some respect I will consider high end components so don't be shy :-)
Thanks a lot but I do not need a server configuration. The network cards that I belive made you think I need a server configuration are just a "nice to have feature". The CPU power required by the software that will use those network cards is not very much. I will have a look at this config. Thanks again.
The reason I showed you server hardware is because is the more affordable dual CPU solution (The other one is a skulltrail platform, but that'll run you about $3000 for the motherboard and CPUs alone, and are not that much faster than these Xeons).
Since you didn't state the software or processing power needed, it was hard for me to make an educated guess. So I went for the more traditional workstation build, assuming you didn't need a Quadro or Fire professional graphics cards.
