PCI-X controllers usually are electrically backward compatible with PCI. Most PCI controllers work in a PCI-X slot. PCI Express is not compatible with PCI.
X is not for a number. PCI-X is PCI-extended, used for many workstation and server cards. It is mostly backwards compatible with PCI. Neither is compatible (in either direction) with PCI-E. PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.1 though.
