P35 vs. P45

Just a quick thought, got the asus P5K premium P35 mobo atm, fairly good value (£110 with wifi), just wondering if I'm running a single HD 4870 and Q6600 OC, will a P45 board make much difference for the amount of money (eg. £129 for an MSi platinum or an asus P5QE for £117.) If so, should I go for those boards or perhaps the P5Q pro, which is substantially cheaper?

I honestly have heard that PCIE 2.0 is only 1-2% faster for top cards than 1.1 - so I think you'd be OK with the P35 if it has more features you'd want

The P45 board will not give you much more than the P35.

The P45 Chipset is built using a 65nm process instead of the 90nm process for the P35 Chipset. This allows for a Higher FSB OC as well as lower power usage.

For the Q6600, FSB will not be a limit when OCing.
The Slight Power Savings likely will not really matter.

(Note: THG does not show power savings with the P45 for some reason, but most other major sites do show the power savings. I suspect it was board selection, such as P35 w/o Raid, IEEE, etc... vs P45 w/ lots of added features.)

Some of the P45 Boards are "ok" at Doing CF on the 4850s, though higher boards would likely be limited based on the results of the 4850s showing mild bottlenecking when doing CF. (A Single Card - Even an X2, would not be limited.

By the time PCIe 2 is needed you will want a Nehalem, so get the P35 and save the dough.

P35 runs at 1333mhz fsb natively, reliably oc to 1600mhz. P45 runs at 1600mhz fsb natively, reliably oc to 2000mhz. Q6600, with its 9x multiplier, runs at 3.6ghz on 1600mhz fsb. So unless it's high oc, it will not be bottlenecked by p35.

But with prices of p45 so low, it makes no sense to get p35 for the $5 or so of savings.

It's actually $10 - £7 minimum. Yeah for $10 maybe get the P45. It depends on how much cash you have. If things are tight get the P35.

Yup, I got the £ and the € confused, I only deal in $.

Even more reason to get the P35 if things are tight.
