Hi all i'm new to this forum and have a question that i can't solve. I recently build a new pc, and overclocked it, ASUS Crosshair Formula 2 8 GB geil ddr 2 pc6400 and a AMD Phenom 2 965 @ 3,8 Ghz atleast that's what the bios tells me and Microsoft(device manager) but when i open Cpu-z and core temp they both give me strange readings, 879.98 Mhz(219.99 X4) on each coré no one seem to can help me and figure out what it is, The Mhz of the memory readings are correct and it's a little bit stressing me out :( someone please help me i have the same readings on both program's thanks in advance

@ obsidian

I Reflashed Bios. But problem remains, Microsoft istelling good clock speeds Bios telling good clock speeds Can u run it displays good speeds,

Cpu-z is doing strange Core temp also Any other suggestions (i reinstalled Win 7 64 bit)

YOu have cool n quiet active and when the system is in idle mode it will downclock the CPU speed to an x4 multiplier to conserve energy since the CPU is not doing anything that requires more and that is what CPU-z will report as the speed - IT is running as designed but as obsidian said if you go in and disable CNQ it will start reporting it accurately. (if you are OCing the CPPU you normally will want to disable CnQ anyway !!)

^
^+1 for both Obsidian86, and JDFan for helping explain things more.

Cool N Quiet. Bios/Windows only read max clock, not the current clock set. CPU-Z actually reads the current clock used, regardless of what the BIOS states the speed to be at. So if coolnquiet is enabled, which it most likely is then your phenom 925 will downclock itself when idle to conserve energy hence why it's at 800 mhz+~. I have found CPU-Z to be fairly accurate in most scenarios.

If you are overclocking, disabling Cool N Quiet is a good idea for stability testing or prolonged used of the overclocked settings.

Cool N Quiet tends to fluctuate voltages/clocks even when in use, which in turn can produce inaccurate results.

Thx Guys for your reply's but it still didn't help for me, i tryed some other things you said (bios CNQ) is disabled, when i run the AMD Clock tool it gives me good readings and fluctuates between 3733 3750 (but when i let windows 7 give a mark for my calculations per second i only get a 3,8) in marks :S i think that's really Low, i got higher scores with my Q8200. i tried several different program's and watch how it changes when i game but the muliplyer stayes at 4.0 with a mamimum of 880Mhz,

:(

Thx for your help

BIOS and Windows will always give the max clock. Windows actually takes the clock speed from the BIOS.

Your motherboard may be have some fluctuations in power fed to CPU thus affecting some of the speeds..

Also check your power settings on Windows 7 make sure Processor power management has your CPU set at 100% minimum/100% maximum state.

Do the clock speeds fluctuate by more then 50mhz when you run prime 95 or another CPU stressing software?

thx 4 your fast reply i have all the options enabled as you say, th Mhz don't fluctuate more than 50 Mhz in orthos or prime 95
THe strange thing is the performance with aunpacking winrar gaming etc, is verry fast And i think i wont be able to play without lag when it doesn;t function properly (what you do you think is this hardware related or a software related error
Thx in advance,

i'm going to to the store with my daughter back in an hour

I appreciate the help verry much :)

sorry 4 my englsih BTW

BTW( when i testprime 95and orthos they give me this reading 3740 Mhz fsb 220 mhz x170.est) that is correct ( but i when i run cpu-z and core temps by the side of ortos and prime 95 i see still the wrong readings in core temp and cpu-z and to what above was said, for the energy savinf feature the multiplyer never goed that low.? from 17 dropped till 4 i never saw this,. my q8200 with energy saving options enabled dropped only 800 Mhz,. not 3000

:( want a slution am desperate

Do you have ASUS EPU software installed? You would probably see a yellow icon in your system tray that changes from a man to an airplane somethimes. This software will downclock your cpu as well. However it should automatically turn off if it detects an overclocked system, so maybe that isn't the problem. I would check your installed programs just in case. Also disable C1E in your bios if you haven't already.

Interesting. Do you have the latest versions of CPU-Z/Core Temp?

Whats power supply are you using and complete setup for that particular machine.
Hard drives, ram stick types/how many, gpu, processor, motherboard, how many usb devices, how many fans etc.

It could be a motherboard not feeding the correct voltage, leaving the CPU working down clocks to try to reach stability but that is not usual at all...

What happens if you leave your CPU at stock clock/voltage?

Since you have a 965, try leaving the FSB/HT ref. clock at 200mhz while only raising the multiplier, it might be that your RAM might not OC well or isn't getting enough voltage. Just make sure you're using anywhere from 1.4-1.45V for your CPU VDD in BIOS, for stabilty.

Just wondering, but do you use Kstat10? That might be affecting your clocks since it changes P-states.

I now have my system Stable @ 4 x 4.5 Ghz 231 Mhz x 19.5 VCore 1.4250

Cpu-z gives me this readings : 231.24 x 4.0=924.96 Mhz per core

So the Bus speed is Displayed well and the multiplyer sticks @ 4

what you guys think.????

i just went to PCL COmputers it's a PCStore here in holland all with chinese and korean people :D i thgought i ask them i took my case went to the store and even they can;t figure it out, they say i have nothing to worry about, and that it is peforming @ the clocked speed (4,5)ghz Thet said it was an amazing overclock with 4 instances of orthos running my temps didn't go above 49 full load, i went all the way up to 4.8 Ghz before it got to hot and i had to open the case, even then i got it stable but after the boot up, i noticed an decrease of performance in games,(my 9600gt is bottlenecking like hell) but after a while i thought it was my cpu so i crancked the voltages up a bit. and all was working well, i must say this is the first time i have an amd and the fist time i had such a major overclock like this on air, and all with verry good temps.the only thing that is depressing me are the wrong value's in the program's i mentiont above. i did everything i could ,but i can't figure out the problem and what still worries me is the amazing low score that windows gave me after puttin a benchmark on my cpu 3,9 WTF for a 4.5 ghz its incredibly low
but when i go and set up some multitasking it performs verryverry good. for instance i unpacked 3 games at the samen time(ripps from skullptura) so with a batch file i let winrar unpack 2 games 5 Gb in 70 sec that's verry fast, + i let one instace running of orthos while i'm playing mw2 @1920 x 1080 o x aa 16 xAf and everything on extra and still no lack of performance.
I'm not a total noob and most things i can figure them out myself but i never seen this before, evern send an email to cpu-z they say the latest version is fully compatible with the processor, and since core temps is giving me the same wrong readings,+ the low score on windows calculations per...... 3,9mark.
i'm still worried,

is There any PRO out there that can help me. i build a lot of pc's and did a lot of overclocks, and cpu-z never malfunctionéd in my life,+ the other software related marks, i'm still verry worried,

PLease someone help me

uh...I'm happy for you, but do tell how you solved it. I'm getting some strange low readings on CPU-Z myself so I was hoping to find a possible solution reading through this thread.

If you see your AMD CPU clocks drop to roughly 1/4 the rated speed of the CPU, that is because a feature that downclocks it and reduces voltage to it while it's idle to conserve energy is doing so

That feature is called Cool'n'Quiet.

It is enabled and disabled within the motherboard BIOS. If disabled, the CPU will run at whatever clock speed and voltage it is set to all the time.
