i got a geForce 8500GT 6 months ago, i saw an article about overclocking GPU. what is actually overclocking? will it harm my CPU? and why ppl overclock thier GPU. The graphic card seems to be working just fine for now, should i also overclock it?

NOPE!!!
That card is borderline worthless when it comes to games. overclocking will only bring instability and heat and nothing for your vista experience index.
Overclocking is forcing the piece of electronics (in this case a graphics card) to run faster than stock.

I concur with the wanker above me (CSI is the gayest show around).

An 8500GT is NOT a gaming card. With 8800gs/9600gs down to $30-50 with rebates, 9600GT's @ $60-80 and 9800GT's @ $99, there's no reason to mess with an 8500GT.

I've also seen 4850's down to $128 with rebate in the last week.

I had a 8500gt, overclocking didnt help much. You'll see a bigger increase if you update to latest drivers and patch all games to latest. I tried OCing to get Oblivion a bit smoother but only after a newer driver did the performance increase.

A bit rude and opinionated but the second half is totally correct.
