Recovering data after deleting partition and reformatting

My PC has two hard disks, and I decided to install Windows 7 on the spare disk. Unfortunately after installing Win 7, I realised that I have installed onto the wrong disk and wiped all my data, pictures, documents, etc.

The disk used to have Windows XP on, but I deleted the partition and installed Windows 7 over the top. I realise that I may not get all my data back, as some of it will have been overwritten, however is it possible get some back?

Google shows various data recovery software programs, but I'm not sure what I need, file undelete? partition recovery, or something else?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

You mentioned you rematted in the topic title, but not in your post.

If you formatted the drive/partition using Windows 7, then your data is gone for good, as Windows 7 zero-writes when formatting unlike XP which only reads to discover bad sectors, but does not zero-write the entire drive when formatting.
