X48 platinum power connectors

i want to buy this motherboard but i only have a 4 pin power connector and the specs of the motherboard say it needs a 8-pin one
can i use the 4 pin one?
i Heard you only need the 8-pin one for "extreme overclocking"
is that true?

It will work with a 4-pin ATX CPU connector, unless you use an extreme CPU. The motherboard should be shipped with a protective cover over 4 of the pins. You remove it to use an 8-pin connector.

I am using X48 Asrock motherboard with QX9770 Extreme and only using 4 pin connector, so far no problems but I wonder how much power draw is used when overclocking and if extra pins is necessary.
