Hi,does anyone know what size 16:9 TV i would have to get, that when in 4:3
mode would give a 32 inch picture ? (IE,with black borders at the sides)
I worked it out to be about 42" but i'm not sure of the exact formula.
I may get a 16:9 TV soon to replace my current 32" 4:3 set,and i want to get
one big enough so that when watching 4:3 programmes,it isnt any smaller than
the 32" i have now.
Hope that question makes sense.!!! If anyone can answer that i would
appreciate it.

What you are requesting is an identical ratio, i.e.,

Well, according to Mr. Pythagoras, a 32 inch 4:3 rectangle has a
height of 19.2 inches, and a 16:9 rectangle with a height of 19.2
inches has a diagonal of, er...
sqrt ( 19.2² + (19.2 x 16/9)²) = 39.16 inches.

No, that formula only works for the width of a 16:9 set, ie. it's 16/9
÷ 4/3 = 1.33333 times wider.
For the diagonal, the formula is
sqrt( (16/9)² + 1) X
- = -
sqrt( (4/3)² + 1) 32
X = 32 * sqrt( (16/9)² + 1)
-
sqrt( (4/3)² + 1)
X = 39.16 inches
Go for the 42" anyway :-)

Posted this on 22/2/05 & 23/2/05, but it did not appear!?!?

if you can't do the math yourself, how do you know that their answer is
correct?
