I have a HP laptop that has apparently died... I wanted to know if there is any way that I can connect the drive to my desktop and see if I am able to mine it for data. Any suggestions or advice?

If you can remove the drive from your laptop, and the drive is still working there are several ways to connect it to your dekstop. I have a external drive adapter (see http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153071&cm_re=thermaltake-_-17-153-071-_-Product) that allows be to connect 2.5" & 3.5" hard drive to my computer via either eSATA or USB. The device comes with both cables. Simply remove the drive from your computer (you will need to remove the caddy as well), plug it in to the adapter, turn on the adapter and it should pop up on your desktop.

One thing, make sure your laptop has a SATA drive, if it is IDE, you will need to get a different external adapter. Check here http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=2.5%22+ide+adapter&x=0&y=0
