The other day I ordered a new comp, I got everything in today (except for the gpu which is coming in a few days) and im about to assemble everything within the hour (I gotta buddy whos done some of this stuff coming to help out)

Ive done mostly small things before (replacing ram, fans, gpu, hard drive) but have never installed/replaced a motherboard/cpu/heatsink/power supply. Was hoping someone knew a good guide for throwing a rig together, and if there was any important advice that I should remember to avoid any common mistakes. Ima copy paste the components below. Anyhelp would be immensely appreciated since im just worried about the cpu or motherboard having issues/breaking and being out a few hundred dollars.

Here are all the components that I have below as well.

And also what kind of "testing" should I do once everything is up and together ?

I mean theres gotta be some sorta way to make sure cpu/mb temps are correct and that coolers/thermal paste werent applied incorrectly ?

you put everything together, you check the connections are all correct, you press the power button and button while jumping around, if everything works fine, then you open the cd tray and put the os disk, you restart and then after 10sec you should see the windows installation screen and you follow the steps...

1) Get the case open…
2) Install the risers for the MB in the case..
3) Install backplate on MB for the heatsink if applicable
4) Fasten the HDDS in there spot
5) Fasten the Optical Drives
6) Install any extra fans
7) Install the Power supply
8) Install the MotherBoard
9) Install the Ram
10) Install the CPU
11) Install the Vid Card
12) Install the Sound Card
13) Plug the junk into the Mother Board
14) Log into BIOS and set Memory to correct Voltage and timings
15) Make sure CPU is recognized…
16) Depending on what CPU and what motherboard check if a Bios flash is required.
17) Confirm temps don’t look crazy in Bios

Install XP or Vista

18) Use realtemp to check your temps http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/
19) Use CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

-Try to avoid carpeted environments… Kitchen can be a good area.
-Don’t rush
-make a plan and try to keep the cabling neat and tidy for superior airflow.

woot two about 3 hours and the thing is gorgeous.

I really wish I would have paid a little more attention to grieves comments though.

The case came with mosta the risers in it (antec 1200), so pretty much threw the motherboard in, hooked all the wires up, then went to start the cpu put it in and, couldnt figure out where that damn retention bracket goes.

The instructions for the heat sink were TERRIBLE.

Either way had to take the motherboard out unplug everything, mount the retention bracket then put it all back in.

Hell they didnt even tell you what side to put the fan on, and whether the fan blows air through the heatsink, or sucks it away from it (either way ya know it has to blow it out of the case)

Ultimately I got everything set up and amazingly did not fry my motherboard or cpu.

I will totally never ever be buying a computer from any store ever again, building is the only way to from now on

Hmm ok couple other things.

Whenever I boot up my computer, before vista starts I get some weird message about Express Gate not being installed ?

And I also get this message really quick (where I think it says your hard disk is not formatted)

Do I need to reformat my brand new hard drive ?
