Hi :hello:

First build here and this is a revision of my previous post. What do you think about this build so far? I have a 24" lcd and play games.

I might (probably not...but still want the capability just in case) in the future add another 4870, do you think that my PSU would be good to go for that? I was worried about the number of connectors but believe it can be pulled off by using some different adaptors. I also might add another HDD in the future and will probably swap out some of the case fans with some scythes.

This is a list of everything in my cart:

NZXT TEMPEST
ASUS P5Q Pro
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
XIGMATEK ACK-I7751 Retention Bracket
Rosewill RCX-TC050 Thermal Grease
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA
ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe
POWERCOLOR AX4870 1GBD5-PPH Radeon HD 4870
Thermaltake W0116RU 750W PSU
mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit

Thanks! :)

Your build looks really solid, all good choices.

However, for a 750w PSU, I'd definitely get a Corsair 750TX (better price and great reliability).

I'd say other than that you're ready to buy.

I just built a rig almost identical to that today (i love it, but my 4870 1g didnt get here yet)

First thing im gonna warn ya, that that cooler works great, but its a little tricky to put on (you wanna stick the retention bracket onto the back of the motherboard before you put it in the case)

And id prob get a different psu.

or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

are a step up in quality at least (for pretty much the same price)

I woulda recomended the 850w antec I just bought, but they jacked the price up 40$ since the end of september (lol 2 days ago), and then I got another 40$ off since I got an antec case.

I was gonna get that exact motherboard but someone on here convinced me to spend a few bucks extra to get

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131296

Its supposdily a slighty more stable board, with better cooling on the north bridge i believe, plus it looks alot nicer in your case (and you wont have to deal with any annoying mail in rebates)

I was a little iffy about ordering a gpu from powercolur since they have a lame warranty, a really sketchy website (incase you need to rma with a doa gpu or invoke your warranty) so I went with one of the other venders. But some people trust powercolor so If you trust them as a company im sure im sure the card would be decent

(I looking through their site a bit, couldnt find anything whatsoever about warranties on their cards or rmaing)

Thanks for the quick replies, I was looking at those two PSUs earlier...I kinda wanted a modular one but after doing a little more reading I think I'm gonna go with the Corsair.

Do you think that board is worth the extra $40? I guess you do since you bought it  but do you have any more info or a thread I could read about them?

I am a little iffy too about the powercolor as I've never tried them and was also having difficulty finding warranty info...so I think I will go with Sapphire...have had their cards before and haven't had problems.

The 750s that dcm lists are better than the Thermaltake. They will run two 4870s, but if you were going to buy a PSU knowing you would crossfire, I would advise a bit more.

The Hiper M series 880W was in the $150.00 range last I looked. It's considered a tier 2 PSU, which means it's real good, not the best.

The P5Q -E is definitely a step up, but I would only really push it if you intended to overclock or needed eSATA. It has other features though, like a better LAN controller.

The whole lot was approx £1200, my E8400 has been overclocked to 3.6 (from 3.0) by changing the FSB mulitplier. I can run all games with super high resolutions with all the shiny bells and whistles turned on.
One thing to be aware of is that these ASUS mobo's have massive vdroop so if overclocking you need to take that into account. Also, apparently these mobo's have issues with certain memory brands. I went for Crucial as was recommended and I have had no probs. The only prob with my rig is that I need an alt PSU if I want to X-fire my 4870. Make sure you buy a PSU with all the right connections if you intend to X-fire.
Cheers
