Hi, So i have a birthday coming up and my loved ones want to buy some stuff to help me upgrade my PC. Budget is $350. I'm not sure what needs upgrading post your thoughts. They don't want to buy games (they don't support gaming, but turn the other cheek), they think upgrading is cool. So, here's my rig

Intel C2D E8400 @ 3.0ghz (stock cooler)
Gigabyte P35 DS3L (1 PCIex16 slot)
Nvidia Zotac 8800GT AMP! Edition
320 gb Hard drive 7200rpm
PC2-6400 RAM (4 gigs)
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
20 inch Acer AL 2016 Monitor (1680x1050)
So, my motherboard has onboard sound, which is really good so i don't need an upgrade on that front. I have a surround sound headset and mic.

So what needs fixing? My HD only has 30 gb left. I know how to overclock (a cooler could be a viable option). I sit in a crappy uncomfortable desk chair (any ideas on an upgrade there?). I have a gaming keyboard and mouse. Budget is $350 (USD).

I'm not sure what to get, there's all kinds of little things that could help my PC, is there any large improvements i can do?

I primarily use my PC for work, gaming, and music/video watching.

Thanks,
-Mersonix

if i were you, what isn't

get a samsung T220 screen!
or get a better graficscard (but 8800gt is still gooooooood enough so better wait on that for next generation if i was you)
a quadcore Q9550 if you motherboard supports it. or!!! just save it up, for the future !

your system is gooooooood enough

yeah, that 's what i mean, look like the 48xx serie from ati performe, i guess the 58xx would do also fine !

if that doubles, damn you will be playing crysis with AA on!

if i were you, get HDD, get better screen (acer is not so good) and be fine with the 8800gT; but remember if you want 24 inch screen that's 1900 native resolution so maybe you'll want a new gpu for that

I am not a believer in waiting... when the 5870 comes out youll debate waiting for the 6870..

something like 9800GX2 destroys 8800gt, but a 24 inch monitor is sweet, i could never game smaller again.

but he has already a 8800Gt = 9800gt. and it's still a top 10 (or better) card. so why should he get a new card from same generation, so much diffrence isn't there between 4850 4870.

I totally forgot about the 9800gx2. I found one on newegg for $280. Wow. How would that do?

I don't want a new screen. Compared to the desk size and how close i am to it, it's huge. (thats what she said!)

If you can - newegg gift card.

If not, I would say to either get bigger monitor or go with another 20" monitor and go dual. Possibly another hard drive and get more space (its always nice to have more). You can always upgrade that crappy computer chair with a nice leather one from office depot or some furniture store - I prefer the ergonomic mesh ones that have 12 points to adjust... but thats just me.

i think you'll have to toss. you clearly want to spend money, why don't you get something you realy NEED. like the HDD. ps: if you want new gpu, don't go for nv 9 serie (8 serie is almost the same). i think ppl will say ati 4870 or GTX 260

just spend it, and send me the old stuff!

ok... cause im gunna get another 4870x2 when they are 250 bucks.

But really that is a great deal for an Evga 8800GX2

Also Mersonix can then get a 640 gig western digital HDD and still be in his budget.

One day get that 24" + monitor (Christmas is getting close)

*edit*
my spelling was pathectic

I cant give you a %100 answer but i Googled "P35 DS3L and 9800gx2" and found about 2343242 people with that setup.

The question is -> will the 9800GX2 fit your case? what kind of case do you have?

get yourself a nice pimped out chair

and get maybe a new hd, they are cheap

and then you have money left over for booze, which you can enjoy while sitting on yer pimped out chair :)

yer system is pretty good as it is already, id wait for a major overhaul till next generation
