Hey, I just upgraded vid cards from an 8800GT to a GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked graphics card and I believe my CPU is bottlenecking me. I currently have the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4ghz 1066mhz fsb Dual Core. I want to pick up a new mobo and cpu and am curious whether I would get better performance from a dual core like the E8400 at 3.0ghz or if a Q6600 2.4ghz quad core would be better. Any suggestions/advice? Here's current specs of the hardware I will be carrying over to the new mobo/cpu. Thank you!

3GB DDR2 PC 6400 800mhz
320gb SATA HDD
GeForce GTX260 Core 216 Superclock 896mb

E8400 would work fine with your setup. I assume you don't OC, so a Q6600 at 2.4ghz is the same as your E6600 at 2.4ghz.

What's the budget you are looking at for mobo + cpu?

I'm hoping to keep it under $300 for the mobo+cpu. My absolute max is probably $350ish but really trying to keep it under $300. Thanks!

What's the real benefit currently in having a 2.4ghz quad core versus a 2.4ghz dual core?

Also, was looking at this bundle on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.147989

That bundle is nice, and grab a zigmatek s1283 cooler and OC that CPU over 4.0, then you will be good to go.

A 2.4 quad wont be no faster then a 2.4 dual in most games.

Drop that 750i and get a P45 instead.

Nvidia chipset for Nvidia cards "SLI" 16x16
P45 for ATI "Crossfire" 8x8
x48 for ATI 16x16

Thanks for the thumbs down and the unneeded tech update. Go gloat about i7 or something.

Hes said nothing about SLI. Yea he may want to upgrade to SLi in the future, but that wasnt in his question, the CPU is not his video, his video card is fine. Besides, not only is a good P45 board cheaper than that 750i in that linked bundle, but P45 is a better overclocker by far. There really is no argument to be had.

Well since he already paired a nvidia gpu with a nvidia chipset he obviously wants to keep SLI as a option.

Everyone knows P45 is a Better chipset for Overclocking, talk about a un needed Tech update, that is common knowledge.

I guess you can read minds because I didn't see where he said he was gonna overclock. And he obviously didn't overclock his last CPU.

I would gloat about my i7, but your obviously super jealous of it since you brought it up, and I see you got a budget piece of crap. The one in your signature is a outdated piece of crap!! Pretty soon there will be E-machines at Walmart more powerful then that junk of yours.

Exactly, he had a CPU question not a motherboard suggestion, so he obviously knows he wants the 750i board. Get a Life!!

You got a P45, and your running your CPU 3.2 LOL Nice overclock, not!!!!!!!! I can get that on a $50 matx board with stock cooling. Most people run q6600 @ 3.6, but I guess you dont know what you are doing. I would of gave you the right settings but your a idiot, so i pass.

In regards to the P5N-D bundle with E8500. It should work fine. As noted you don't OC, so it should not matter how good or bad Nvidia 750i can OC.

The e6600 should overclock .

Spend some money on a cpu cooler , for a $50 upgrade that gives you 50% more cpu power
