I am trying to find out if my 2 month old Gateway FX541S 680i ddr2 6400 with the Q6600 will support the change from the 2.4 quad to the Q9650 3.0 quad. Found one for a fairly good $. Gateways help sucks.... as they refuse to answer the question unless I pay the 65 bucks an hour premium support fee :fou: :kaola: that is a bunch of BS! My research so far has shown that all the 541 series uses the exact same mobo and BIOS with all the 775 intel chips... except the factory OC'ed version which I have read did not doo too well...all running ddr2. Any idea were to find this out for free? Can not find "systemboard 680i" motherboard support anywere. Thanks! Tim

PS..... still trying to get FSX to fly faster
FYI: 2 9600GT's sli, 4GB ddr2 6400/800 700 watt PS and lots of coolingand a big ass monitor 9600 X 1200
Have it ( q6600 ) oc'ed to 2.83.... thats all she's got and there aint no more!

I've heard that the 680i have problems supporting Yorkfield Quads: Q9xx0. You may want to hold off and do a thorough research first.

While EVGA is not your brand, this is an official annoucement:

With that in mind, Nvidia likes to keep a close leash on all of their board design, so most 680i will have the same quirks and problems.

What about a Intel QX6850 3GHZ 1333FSB 8MB? This is the one that Gateway uses on the top of the line of the 541 series with the same mobo. It's a kentfield also and there are several out there to be had for a good price that will OC a lot higher. IM just trying to get a year or so out of this computer and then IM going to build...thanks to all of you... one from scratch that will be kick ass!
Thanks Tim

QX6850 is not worth it. You're paying alot for 200mhz gain from your current CPU. At the prices that I found with Google, it is way too much. You can get an i7 920 setup for that price.
