I haven't ordered anything yet, and i'm pretty new to this sort of thing as this is my first. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I'll be using it for internet, music/video (plenty of space), some audio recording and editing. Not much gaming, if any. In the future, i'd like to hook this rig up to my projector and use it for blu-ray, and possibly dvr (hdmi a plus).
I wasn't sure about upgrading to vista 64, but since i plan on giving away my old box (with windows xp installed) i figure I will need to purchase a new os.

Also, I have an M-audio solo that I use for recording music and as a soundcard. Will this be sufficient, or will I need to buy a soundcard.

I'd go with an AMD board that has integrated video i think its 790 GX or something like that and then get a 4670 because its atleast twice as good as a 8600 and if you decide you want to play games in the future it will serve you much better than the 8600 will

I would change out the x2 6000+ 3.1Ghz for the new x2 6000+ 3.0Ghz its got twice the l2 cache and its the same price and wattage.

I would suggest atleast getting the 8800gt. its much faster and its about $120 at newegg.

You can go much cheaper on the power supply since you won't be drawing near that much power. The Antec Earthwatts 430w at $40 no rebate would be fine, even for the upgraded graphic card (HD4670 which would be a better choice for your use) suggested by Throgrom.

I'd also agree with thogrom on getting the 790GX motherboard

or the biostar at $99

in fact with no gaming you could get by with the integrated graphics in the GX790, only add a card if needed

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128352
instead of the asus board

Antec earthwatts EA500 500W ATX12V v2.0 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
instead of the 650 w.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium

I think Ill try the 790gp graphics card as is and possibly add on another when I hook up a projector or need the extra juice, as dirt suggested.
anything else i'm overlooking?
thanks
