Recover xls file which was overwritten

Hello, I just pulled up an existing spreadsheet which contained all my 2010 data. I began overwriting it with my 2011 data and clicked on save rather than save as which overwrote my 2010 data. It is on my local hard drive with no backup. How can I recover my 2010 file?

With how you saved it, you can't get the old data back. If you deleted the file, and started a new one, that can be recovered off the disk, with saving new data in the file and saving it, no way to get to the old version. Excel does not have a version backup.

With XL 2007 and Windows 7 or later - If you have restore points you may be able to get to previous versions of XL files: Find the file in the file menu > Right Click on it. Click on restore earlier versions > Select the date before you overwrote it > Open it and check to see if it has the data you want > If it does: Save it with a new name > If not, try an earlier one.
