I just read the article on 2.8GHz quads compared, and something is not adding up.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/quad-core-cpu,review-31788-8.html
The 3d mark vantage CPU score for their i5 750 @ 2.8GHz is 37800.
My score @ 3.9GHz is 17870 only? This can't be right, right? This is on the "performance" settings in 3dMark.
My total score was P10908. It seems it should be around 12000-12500.

My Setup:
Core i5 750 @ 3.9 GHz (195 x 20), 1.264 Vcore.
2 x 2g Corsair XMS DDR3-1333
Asus P7P55D-E
4870 1G

I see they're using Vantage V1.0.2. I think mine is an older one, maybe V1.0. Could this be the problem?

well there is something obviously wrong here... I get 13k in vantage at 3.2Ghz with a GTX 260...

Do you have v_sync disabled? Are your GPU settings set to "performance"?

PhysX performed on the GPU during the test is counted as CPU score, giving a dramatic CPU score boost, skewing the comparison between systems with ATI and Nvidia cards.

Although it does not make sense, it does give boost FOR SOME REASON!

Thanks. So it WILL also affect the CPU Score then?
Will it be possible to add a 8600gt to do PhysX only? I believe I will have to do this in XP?

1. Yes.

2. Why not? You can insert the 8600GT as long as you have a PCIE slot where your 4870 is plugged in.

Yep - Vantage is extremely skewed toward Nvidia cards !! - as an example here is my score with an X3 720 @ 3.0 Ghz. and an ATI 5770 GPU ( http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/JDFanning_bucket/benches01.jpg ) And here is the same CPU @ stock 2.8 GHz. (both CPUs have the 4th core enabled) with an Nvidia 8800 GPU ( http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww98/Surreal23/3dmarkscore-2.jpg ) notice the CPU scores go from 10668 on the OC w 5770 and yet the outdated 8800 makes the CPU score go to 18352 !!!! also if you look at the 2 CPU tests you will see test 1 is better on the OC system due to the slight OC but the difference is in Test 2 which is the physics test !

Physx is a hack for Vantage scores so Nvidia can sale more cards to noobs.. You can not hold any world records with PhysX enabled as Vantage will not allow it..

Now what you are your seeing is real world results and why Ati cards run games just as fast without the PPU as if you disabled it on Nvidia cards the results would be mind blowing and sad at the same time. Ati displays rawl power and if your gpu score is 9000-10000 your good for a 4870.. It can get odd seeing your gpu score being high the your overall score but it just means the gpu is not bottlenecked and is running at full speed..

I never go by the overall score with any PPU enabled as it will not show the true result (smoke and mirrors)..

The true way to see how fast a system is in Vantage is look at the gpu score and the fps in test 1 and 2 as this measures gpu horsepower .. this is a single HD 5850

Typical ATI fanboy post

Who cares if physX gives you a boost in 06?? Are you mad at Nvidia because 06 was coded to perform better with GF cards. I can care less, as long as my games play a respectable frames with some eye-candy that is all that matters.... 06 is not a real bencher, on the other hand just like you said, run Vantage and get a legit score....

It's misleading the consumer and why the OP thinks he is having issues .. i own Nvidia cards also but the PPU will not make the gpu score any higher or fps in those test any faster .

Agreed, but to say that idiots (noobs) buy NV cards just to get a higher score in 06 is ridiculous... Please let me know if you see such a noob, I would like to have a talk with him ;)

Can you post the specs of your PC when you took that last Vantage screenie? I don't see your spec's anywhere posted and I can barely see the score as well. I can't zoom in on pic's from my work PC ;)

It may not be a good word to use(noob) but anyone thinking because there cpu scores 40,000 and boost there overall score will mean it's faster then someone not useing a PPU is misleaded by Nvidia .. also why do you keep talking about 06 >> I never said anything about 06..

My Vantage score is overall 14,384/ gpu score 15,562/ cpu score 11,722

Gpu test 1 / 47.58 avg

Gpu test 2 / 43.52 avg

Intel q6700 at 3.4Ghz
Gigabyte p965 DS3 Rev 3.3
OCZ Reapers 4Gb @900Mhz
HIS HD 5850 @ 850core /1200 x 4 memory
PC Power & Cooling 610

I guess you learn something new every day... I thought physX didnt matter in Vantage :??: , to my understanding physX gave a boost only in 06 .....

Once I get home I will run Vantage (physX disabled) at 3.4Ghz just to compare scores and see whats up ;)

Phys X doesn't work on 3DMark 06 at all and was built for Vantage and why it disables the Cpu test from running on the Cpu like Vantage built it to do so.. Nvidia's PPU makes the CPU test run on the GPU and why the CPU score is boosted by 75% or so.. if i was useing a PPU my overall score would be about 18,000 or so.. just disable the PPU before you run Vantage is the settings and this would give you a real world score for your sysytem.

I have the basic version of Vantage, it won't let me disable PPU......

Do I actually have to buy the "advanced edition" in order to tinker with the settings?

Im a noob when it comes to Vantage.... I just upgraded strait from XP Pro to Win 7 Pro 64..... All this DX and eye-candy stuff is new to me....
