Check my sig for my system but i am thinking of getting this motherboard as the start of my upgrades. the Asus PQ5 (newegg has a $20 promo code right now so it's 99.99 after rebate)

As you can see, I have overclocked and plan to continue to do so. What i don't like about my current DS3 is the lack of SLI or CrossFire support. In addition, my graphics card the 8800 gts 320, sucks in sli so it's not worth it. I was thinking about upgrading to the radeon 4850. Then finally, get a new quad core processor. I am not completely up to date on intel's roadmap but i was wondering two things.
1. Will I be bottlenecked by the second 8x pcie lane with a 4850 (or whatever the best card is at the time i get it)
2. Will the PQ5 support whatever processors come out next spring.
To clarify, the order of upgrades will be
1. motherboard. (within a month)
2. graphics card (hopefully by January)
3. processor (sometime late spring)
4 Windows Vista with 8GB Ram to complement it (sticking with XP for now)
Or, should I just wait and buy it all at once. The biggest problem i have is my current graphics card and my 22" monitor. It struggles a little at 1680x1050. I have already overclocked it as far as i can without modding the bios for a voltage increase.
1. Yes, but not by much... really depends on monitor resolution. You are fine with 4850s and a 22" monitor... only losing 4 frames per second or so compared to an x48.
2. Socket 775 is coming to an end. You may get a few upgrade CPUs yet, but things will be switching over to the new socket soon. You will still be able to buy a CPU in the spring... probably.
You should grab a new video card and get 4GB total RAM and wait till summer.
I gotta agree with the Proximon, i'd probably just get a GPU now and wait on a mobo/CPU till later. The low end i7 isn't too far out of reach from the rumors i've heard.
I thought about getting a graphics card now and the rest later. I don't like to spend more than $30 for a computer game. So unless best buy has an after thanksgiving special on far cry 2 or Fallout 3 etc. I won't be getting the game for a little while. That is why I thought about getting a motherboard first since I don't need the performance immediately. I figured I would get the graphics card closer to when I need it becasue I'll be able to get the best one possible. If the i7's are close then I might wait. A core 2 at 3.4 should be fast enough for the near future since I don't do video editing.
Is the 4850 the best bang for my dollar right now? Like I said. I will be gaming at 1680x1050. I will be getting a new motherboard next year and then adding Crossfire/SLI (depending on the card) later.
