I have both processors, the e2160 is installed and running at 3.0GHZ. Should i replace it with the x2 5000+ and run it at 3.0GHZ? Will I get better performance?

The 2160 is about a year old and the athlon is still in the box. I also have a new asus MB to throw in if I switch processors. I use this machine for 9-% gaming

TIA

If you already have an e2160 running at 3.0GHz then you should leave it alone. You would probably have to overclock the 5000+ X2 to around 3.5GHz to get similar performance. While that's doable if it's a Windsor core (but boy will it heat a room) I wouldn't count on it with a Brisbane core. Build a secondary computer or an HTPC with the 5000+

I've seen a few benchmarks where the E2180 and 6400+ go head to head so I'd assume that the E2160 is somewhat faster than a 5000+ when both are at stock. Also Intel chips overclock better.

Another factor is how AMD rates its chips. The 5000+ comes from clock speed * IPC (3 in AMDs case) vs Intel Pentium 4 clock speed * IPC (2). The E2160 is Core 2 based and has a 4 IPC. Aka in theory at the same clock speed as the AMD chip it should be 33% faster. That is also why the 2ghz/4 IPC E2180 can give the Pentium 4 3.73ghz/2 IPC chips hell if not beat them.

id keep the E2160 becuase i have a 5000+ black edition and it wont go any higher than 3.3GHZ.

i would think that the E2160 could overclock alot higher than a 5000+
