Over the weekend my dad's computer took a dive when his hard drive crashed. He has an older Compaq AMD SR1417CL model-Sempron processor and a single 512MB PC3200 on the board. I'm buying him a new hard drive however I'd like to upgrade his ram. I have a pair of 512MB PC3700 466MHz DIMM's from an older PC I've junked. Is it possible to swap those in place of the 512MB chip he has there already? It just saves us $40.

I did and I got the 'bleep of death sound' after swapping the memory. I can't find anywhere that talks about the compatability between 400Mhz and 466Mhz DIMM's. My guess is no they are not compatible but I just wanted to ask first.

You performed the test and you determined that they are not compatible. If they are not on the list, then you can't expect them to work. On the other hand, you could sell them and buy a module that is known to work.
