Windows Vista should be able to find the Realtek driver automatically, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Did you plug 2.0 speakers into the wrong outlet? If your audio is set to 2.0, the rest of the outlet won't give any signal, naturally.

my mobo has an option in bios to disable onboard sound and it came toggled off, yours might too look around a little =)

Narrow it down: Does the system think the sound devices are installed properly? Check device manager or whatever the Vista equivalent is.

1) BIOS inspection
2) OS driver recognition
3) Updated drivers (from website) / updated playback software
4) Check physical connections
5) Check software mixer settings

Swap your speakers with a some known working speakers. Or place your speakers on another known working computer to ensure that they work.
