Is there an issue with some wireless printers and wireless usb adaptors knocking

I have a dell desk top that I connect to my internet via a wireless adapter to my wireless router and when I plug in my HP wireless capable office jet all in one printer via usb cable it instantly knocks my desk top off line and I have to power down then back up again with it being unplugged from the printer (or the printer power off) in order to get my internet back up!!! It is madness, how can I fix this situation. Would a stronger wirless adapter help, I am pulling out my hair with this!!
