MB for 3D Graphics

At the moment I'm running an Asus P5WD2 with 4Gb RAM, a Pentium D 3.4 GHz and an nVidia FX4500 graphics card, all used for2D graphics production.
I am now moving over to CG using LightWave 9.6. Bearing in mind that animation will not be a requirement - only the rendering of 3D images, I wonder if anyone can advise what would be the best Asus board plus chip combination for 3D work?

The fastest quad-core Intel CPU you can afford, and a MB to run it that will hold lots of RAM.
