Hey,

I'm on a low budget for a gaming comp ($650) and I can either get the E8400 or the Q6600. There are lots of comparisons out there between the 2 processors, but I can't find any comparisons for WoW (which is the only PC game I'm playing atm but I want room to play other games in case).

Does anyone have a Q6600 or an E8400 and play WoW? If so what fps do you get with very high to max settings (also what is your video card)? Do you think there is a difference bigger than 3 fps between the two processors?

Thanks so much!

You won't see a ton of difference between the two really. I run a q6600 and a 8800gt 1GB edition. I can run it at max settings w/o any problems. Personally I'd go quad. The extra multitasking ability may be helpful if you decide to dual box.

WoW does not need a big CPU - anything you can buy these days will cap out the fps at 60...

The GPU starts to become more important when you crank up the res - I have a x1950 pro and get 60fps in the open, and 30/40 fps in the centre of very busy towns / raids - everything cranked up to max.

I would say the E8400. But if you need a new motherboard don't go with the LGA775 as it is a dead end. Unfortuently if you don't go LGA775 then you'll have to look at LGA 1366 which is Core i7 and none of the Core 2's would work or you can go with AM2+ or AM3. Either way I would sugest waiting a bit.

how would he be able to run the E8400/Q6600 if he doensn't get a LGA775 mobo? it''s not a matter of choice unless he uses a diff. proc that has a diff. socket. the only socket better right now is the LGA1366, and getting an i7 system to run wow is throwing money down the river. LGA775 is still very much alive until the i7 gets lower in price and becomes more mainstream. WoW isn't a particularly hard game to max out. I agree with PsyKhiq and personally i would go with the quad. OC it to 3.0ghz+, call it a day and you're good to go. Multi-tasking is just as much as important as gaming when you're not gaming :p

So you are suggesting he buy a SLOWER CPU now, so in the future he MIGHT be able to upgrade to a processor that is faster???

I'm really have a VERY hard time following this logic...............

Neither..........
Grab yourself an E5200 and save $80 or more...........

Wow is NOT a demanding game.
The ATI 4670 and 4830 are also relatively inexpensive cards that will easily handle WoW.

the E8400 is not slower at stock settings unless he is using somthing that has 4 Threaded application. And the E8400 overclocks higher than the Q6600.

Just to let everyone know, I got an E8400 because there was a good combo deal on Newegg... I'm glad I did because now there are no good combo deals in January including the Q6600 or E5200. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Wow has actually gotten pretty bad now especcially if you turn up the res and effects. I have have people drop off to as little as 15fps in the new expansion areas that run some pretty decent rigs especially when there are a lot of characters on screen. I play it casually and in certain area's before I returned my 9800gtx+ for breaking would only see like 28fps or so at 1360x768 res

psychology and rewards systems. This scientist did a study which found that the delayed rewards can lead to compulsions which wow does. They had a rat where if it pushed a lever food would be given after some time they had it so the the rat had to press the lever 1,000,000 times before given food.

E8400.

It's cheaper.

It OCs Better.

You get same if not more performance on a game that isn't even scripted for multi-core.

Dual cores produces less heat generally and suits most of today's demanding games.

The only few games I'll exclude from where maxing out graphics is totally not possible even with 1 4870 1gb are 1) GTA 4 2) Crysis series
