Will this work? (networking with a USB modem)

Hello everyone, first post here.

I'm new to networking and I want to connect 2 computers but there's a problem. I have a USB DSL modem (got it 2 years ago when i didn't think i would ever network) and a netgear MR814 router (given to me by a friend).

Since I can't connect the two, I was thinking about getting a usb/ethernet converter and a usb gender changer. However, before i buy these items, I wanted to ask for some opinions. Has anyone tried this? Will it work? If yes, would there be a decrease in connection speed/performance? If not, are there other options? Are there other options besides getting a new modem or router (i really need the cheapest solution)? Thanks in advance.

quite an elaborate plan. sorry, that wont work at all. think of that usb/ethernet adaptor as a one way only adaptor. it wont go the other way. are you sure your dsl modem doesnt have an ethernet port on it as well as the usb port? the ones ive seen have both. if not your going to have to either get a new modem or a router that will accept a usb router.

Cant you just put NIC's in both computers and connect them up with a crossover cable then enable ICS. That way you wouldn't need the router at all. Of course if you wanted to add more computers in the future, you would have to change this.

It would be cheaper just to make a regular network...and a lot...better.
