Ok so my buddy gave me a mobo that was givin to him. MSI K8n Neo4 Plat Sli

I installed everything to find that when i placed the video card into PCI-e1 nothing happens. I turn on the pc but nothing happens. powers up but no post, no beep error and no post or windows boot.
I checked the SLI jumper board and it is set correctly placed into the NOT SLI setting.
I said what the heck put the video card into PCI-E2 and it posts and runs everything just fine. *shrug* right?

So i downloaded GPUz and it tells me my GTX 280 is only running at x1 and it capable of x16

Can anyone help me out with this? I updated the bios, looked into bios settings to change... nothing...

Maybe the mobo has a broken 1st x16 slot? According to the MSI web site, the 2nd 16x physical slot is only x1 electrically, so it sounds like yours is working OK. In SLI mode, each of the two x16 physical slots get x8 electrically.

remember, to get the 16x bandwidth, you have to put it in the pci-e16x slot. that is to say, the eeexxxtttrrreeeemmmmeeelllyyy long one. to me it looks like you put it in a plain old pci-e slot.

cs - no, he put it in the 2nd x16-sized slot. However, the MB design means that slot only gets x1 connected electrically in "normal" mode, and x8 connected electrically in SLI mode.

So if the first slot is dead? im better off getting a new mobo? Nothing i can do i take it? I know MSI wont fix it for free..

Yep, unless you want to use it for something that doesn't need much video, such as an Ubuntu-based server of some sort.
