Recycle bin automatically emptying itself

Hello,
I hadn't really noticed but the recycle bin on my new computer seems to be automatically emptying itself. I checked the properties and it has enough space on the drive and is not ticked to automatically delete. I looked in Windows Help and couldn't find out what might be causing this. Is there something else that could be responsible which I could change? So far it hasn't mattered but I would welcome advice.

Are files not even going to the Recycle Bin, or does it emply when you reboot? Have you actually opened it up and did not see any files? I have seen cases where the icon looks like an Emply Bin, but the files were still there.

I have the same problem since changing to Windows 7. Files do go to recycle bin, but are gone on next starting the computer (so are disappearing either at shutdown or startup). At the same time I changed to Win7 I replaced Norton 360 with Avast (antivirus) and Online Armor (firewall). Don't know if that is relevant. Have looked at microsoft link you provided but can't see anything about this problem there.
