Installing windows xp on verbatim external hard drive

i just bought my 320 GB verbatime external hard drive and i'm trying to install windows xp on it yet since few hours it just keeps saying that windows can't find the driver, again i tried that on another laptop utelizing windows vista still it said that it can't yet this time because the vista version is newer than the one used?????????????!!!!!!!! any suggestions

You can't install XP on a USB external HD. That is because WinXP loads drivers for USB devices shortly after it starts booting, which affects the external drive. You will encounter a blue screen saying "Inaccessible boot device" or something similar.
