If I was to use 8gb memory when building my new desktop, which would work better:
2 sticks of 4gb ram or 4 sticks of 2gb ram?
My cousin suggested using less sticks to reduce latency. Just wanted to get another oppinion.
It depends on the specs. I run 4 x 2 GB modules at their rated frequency, latencies and voltage (800 Mhz, 4-4-4-12 and 1.8V) and the system is stable. If you have a P45 and will eventually install 16 GB, then go with 4 GB modules as long as they run at 1.8V.
1. Make sure you are running an x64 OS. Other wise it's a waste.
2. If planing to go above 8GB later, get 4GB DIMMs else 2GB DIMMs.
Thanks, and yeah I know only 64bit recognizes >4gb ram.
Also, if I were to upgrade to 4gb of ram on my laptop (32bit) from 2gb, would the spare memory be dedicated to video ram? My friends laptop did that when he installed 4 gigs.
