Problem highlighted files copy automatically

In windows xp when I highlight a group of files, it is automatically coping them. How do I stop it?

It's actually creating duplicates of the files or just puts them into the clipboard (like the Copy command does). Have you tried a different mouse or keyboard?

How does this work when it happens? You drag your mouse around a group of files to select them, release the mouse, and all of a sudden you get duplicates? Or do you move the mouse a bit with them selected and then let go of the mouse? What happens exactly?
