How to check if the new drive is in perfect condition?
I want to order a SEAGATE 7200.12 500gb or WD Caviar Black 640gb from Ncix.com .
The problem is I don't have my PC here right now, all I have is my laptop and a USB External HDD Enclosure.
I've heard that some drives turn out faulty after a short time of use. If had my PC here I would run some of those benchmark programs and test the drive's performance. But all I have now is a USB interface low speed external enclosure. Is there any way to test the drive with it and be sure that it's not faulty?

Do lots of reads and writes, benchmarking, scan for bad sectors, and watch the SMART Values carefully.
