I have an HP d4100e with an Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ processor (2.2GHz) and I was hoping to upgrade to the 3.1GHz version (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103272). I am wondering if there are any compatibility issues. According to Belarc Advisor, my motherboard info is:

Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. Amberine 1.03
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.14 01/17/2006

Does anybody have any advice?

Your board appears to be socket 939, no? That CPU you picked out won't fit, it's for socket AM2. Unfortunately, there aren't any cheap cpus for you to upgrade to.

MB spec page for the computer from HP:

Socket 939 confirmed. As such, Newegg doesn't even sell any socket 939 processors. Tigerdirect only has one:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applica [...] No=1649954

And, it isn't listed as compatible. (This is a server chip, not a desktop chip.) Further, it is only a .2 Ghz increase.

Zipzoomfly only has single core processors for that socket type.

Buy.com's limited selection is only for other sockets.

Being an Intel person myself, your situation seems much the same as the one I faced a year ago. I attempted to find the "best" upgrade for my aging HP...a single core Pentium 4 system...and found out that it would just be best if I built an entirely new system.

I've yet to scrap parts from my old machine, but my wife's old system (another single core Pentium 4) has already been scrapped. Mine's just biding its time as a Win 98 SE "old gaming" pc now.

I would get a mid range video card, such as the 9800gt, and better power supply for your present system. You can transfer both if you build your own later. Corsair, antec, seasonic, or pc power and cooling at 600-700 watts will work fine.
