im going to be getting an ati radeon 4850 but have a pretty old crt monitor which is fine for me, but i need to know whether ill have to buy one of those stupidly expensive dvi-vga converters. the screen is a packard bell a720, ad no i wont be able to upgrade

Most, if not all, video cards come with the ability to use the vga port (if it has two dvi ports it will likely come with an adapter for vga). Don't worry about it, no reason to upgrade display unless you want to.

all video cards come with a DVI-VGA adapter, so you won't have any problems.
