Win2k + SB Live!

Hi there.

First here's my specs:
OS: Windows 2000 Service Pack 2
CPU: K6-2 375 MHz
Memory: 96 Mb RAM
Chipset: VIA (Running 4in1 drivers, version 4.33V)
Motherboard: FIC VA-503+ (AT interface)
Sound: Creative SB Live! 1024 Player
GFX: Winfast Leadtek GeForce2 MX
Network: Generic 10/100 Mbit card for cablemodem.

Aiight, and the problem:
I just recently installed win2k, and ever since, my sound under windows, music, and sometimes in games (Especially Half-Life, in the menu) has started to stutter. It's all fine when I don't do anything besides listening to music (mp3), but if I start a program, switch between programs, or just surf with IE, my soundcard gives a nasty high pitched squeak when I load a page, or just scroll on a page. It has never happened before using win98.

What I have tried: Installing new drivers from Creative site, installing the ones that ship with win2k, unchecked everything in Windows sound volume, except Wave and Master volume. Still it gives noise and crackles.. Anyone experienced this, and hopefully worked around it ? Or do I have to switch back to win98 ?

I have the same problem, I think that it has to be then driver as 98SE was fine and Windows 2K should be the same as NT4.0 which I am told works fine with this card.

I had similar problems with my SB PCI512 (basically a live! card) when I upgraded my system to 2K, even after installing creative's drivers as well. The only thing that finally fixed it was to do a complete clean install of Win2K from scratch. And then the stock windows SBLive! drivers worked on it fine. So I left it alone, god forbid I update the drivers and windows [-peep-] it up again.

Well, I just formatted C:, reinstalled win2k, and are now using standard drivers Win2k loaded.. But it's still the same.. I also found that in Quake3, it gives noises and crackles ALL the time.. But something tells me I should either find WinXP, roll back to Win98, or trash this card and find another one. Although it's a great card.

If I were you, I'd check to see if any other devices were conflicting with the sound card, especially the NIC. IRQ conflicts often cause cracking and popping in the speakers. I'd be doubly supicious of this due to the other problems encountered, such as when using the browser. I had to troubleshoot a similar situation when I was using a cable modem. Selecting a new PCI slot for the NIC card, and letting Win2k redetect the card with an updated set of drivers solved the problem.

Do you have the same problem after booting into Safe Mode? And does your mainboard fully support ACPI? If not, you might have to reload Win2k as APM, and manually assign the IRQ's.

(Standard PC is APM)

Creative recently released new drivers for their SoundBlaster Live! cards ... I'm running with them in Win2k with no errors.
