was wondering if this build is all fine and compatible? is the PSU big enough or do I need more watts?

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L Main Board
4GB PC6400 DDR2 800Mhz RAM
320GB 7200RPM HDD
20X Samsung Lightscribe Dual Layer SATA DVD-RW Drive
512MB Nvidia GeForce 9800GT
CoolerMaster Black Centurion T05 Case
500watt Antec Earthwatts PSU
Onboard LAN and Sound

this is all costing $820 (including shipping).

I don't see any problem, the PSU is big enough even if you overclock.

I would only suggest a bigger hard drive. 320GB isn't the best deal now.

Yes, that's a nice build. Get RAM that will run at its advertised timings on the JEDEC standard 1.8V. Mushkin is my current favorite for RAM, but I've used A-Data too.

I'd suggest the WD Caviar Black 500gb. Should be about 80-90 dollars. And it's pretty fast in read/write, it's seek time is the same as most budge drives though.

Looks good, DS3L is a nice board, rock solid. The Earthwatts will run it all fine even if you OC. Also snag a bigger HD if you can, I filled up my 250gb faster than I thought and you could get a 500 or 750gb for not much more.

Good build. If I would change anything it would be a bigger Hard Drive and perhaps a Radeon 4850 instead. Still, good build.
